Ex-SFA official reacts to Rangers player controversy v Celtic – ‘It definitely wasn’t’

Rangers decisions reviewed by Steve Conroy after Celtic defeat

Steve Conroy, a former Scottish Premiership referee, responded to a Celtic penalty request after it was suggested that Dujon Sterling had handled the ball inside the Rangers box.

Alistair Johnson zipped the ball across the penalty area, and Willie Collum’s handball complaints were dismissed.

Following a 2-1 loss, the Gers dropped six points behind Celtic in the title chase. Cyriel Dessers headed the goal, but it was enough thanks to goals from Matt O’Riley and John Lundstram.

In an interview with the Daily Record on May 11, Conroy expressed his thoughts on the domestic side’s pleas in no uncertain terms.

“Alistair Johnston was involved in this one again, as the Celtic defender flashed a ball across goal. There was a brief check regarding a possible handball against Dujon Sterling, but nothing caught my eye,” the speaker stated. There was no way that was a handball.

How did the Rangers do against Celtic?

Since Rangers supporters were not let inside, Celtic would always have the advantage with the ball and opportunities.

This is how it transpired, but except from a single O’Riley blow from the boundary, they were unable to defeat Jack Butland the entire time.

The fact that John Lundstram scored an absurd own goal and was sent off for a careless tackle on Johnson was disappointing.

Despite being under a lot of pressure and not wanting the ball, the Canadian knew that flying in high on his calf would result in a red card.

Celtic was ahead in the game from that point on because they were up ten men and were leading.

You could claim that Philippe Clement’s team did well to shut out the second half because they didn’t score again and Butland even saved a penalty.

Rangers’ dreams of winning the championship have all but vanished after a difficult day.
