Exclusive: Barnet manager Dean Brennan criticised the physical approach of the opposition

Barnet manager Dean Brennan voiced his frustration with the physical style of play from Aldershot after his team’s 1-0 victory over the 10-man side in the National League on Tuesday. Despite the win, Brennan was critical of the aggressive approach taken by the opposition and called for better protection from referees for his players.

In an interview with the club’s media, Brennan said, “It was frustrating. Of course, it’s good to get a clean sheet and win, but we didn’t give up many chances. In the first half, we were progressive with our play, and then the red card happens.”

He singled out Theo Widdrington, the son of Aldershot’s manager, for a “cowardly” elbow on Glover and expressed his disbelief at Widdrington’s conduct afterward. Brennan also criticized the referee for not taking control of the game earlier, citing an initial heavy challenge on Mark Shelton that went unpunished.

Brennan admitted his team’s play in the final third, especially in the second half, was subpar, saying, “Our progressive play and our final third play were crap.” He called out his attacking players for their lack of production, naming Glover and Brunt as those who failed to make an impact, while praising Idris Kanu for his performance.

Despite Barnet’s victory, the Bees boss acknowledged the team’s ongoing struggles with injuries, but he emphasized that those missing players would likely be playing at a higher level if not for their setbacks. He also praised his team’s defensive effort, particularly in dealing with second balls, which he saw as crucial to the win.

Barnet will look to maintain their strong form when they face AFC Fylde at the Hive on Saturday. The team is currently sitting top of the National League, having secured a 3-0 win against local rivals Wealdstone in their previous match.
