Exclusive: Birmingham City told transfer need as clamour grows for three players

Supporters of Birmingham City think the team should prioritise signing a new custodian when the January transfer market opens.

According to BirminghamLive’s study, a staggering 65% of fans think the Blues should add a new glovesman to their transfer wish list. During the summer transfer window, the team acquired Ryan Allsop and Bailey Peacock-Farrell as new goalkeepers.

Peacock-Farrell, a Northern Ireland international, began the season as the starting quarterback, but a string of mistakes forced Chris Davies to make a change recently. Allsop has started the last three league and cup games for the Blues, recording two clean sheets during that time.

However, supporters still feel that the position needs more attention. Ten percent of fans want to see the Blues bolster their wide defence, while sixteen percent think the defensive needs more immediate attention. It should come as no surprise that few people think the Blues’ offence and midfield need to be strengthened right now.

The player who has most wowed fans is Christoph Klarer (28%) followed by Alex Cochrane (10%), Tomoki Iwata (18%), Willum Willumsson (14%), and Paik Seung-ho (19%). Klarer, an Austrian defender, has established himself as a mainstay in Davies’ lineup thanks to a run of strong defensive performances.

At the present, Ayumu Yokoyama isn’t even a regular in the Blues’ roster. 36% of fans want to see more of the 21-year-old winger, who has struggled for playing time since late August. Additionally, there is demand for Icelandic right-back Alfons Sampsted (21%) who has yet to make his League One debut and midfielder Marc Leonard (31%), who has been benched since Iwata’s arrival.
