Fresh off the international break, Southampton manager Russell Martin has shared positive injury news regarding one of his players ahead of their upcoming clash with Manchester United.
The Saints are eager to avoid further injuries as they continue searching for their first win since returning to the Premier League. Their tough start was highlighted by a 3-1 loss to Brentford before the break, which included another error while playing out from the back. Despite this, Martin remains unfazed by the criticism and has emphasized that it won’t affect his tactical approach.
Southampton are highly optimistic about the potential of one of their young players. Manager Russell Martin spoke to the press, as reported by the *Southern Daily Echo*, addressing the heightened scrutiny in the Premier League. He emphasized that external criticism doesn’t influence his approach:
“The noise increases in the Premier League, but it doesn’t affect what we do. I actually find some of the comments interesting, and I think some people would love to play with this team because they’re talented and understand our style. People are paid to have opinions, sometimes with little evidence, but everything I say gets questioned.”
As Southampton prepares for the visit of Manchester United, Martin appears set to stick with his high-risk playing style, despite the criticism. He noted that even United were caught out in possession against Liverpool before the international break.
On the injury front, Martin confirmed Kamaldeen Sulemana is nearing a return, although it might not be as soon as this weekend. He added, “Maxwel Cornet’s in the squad. Everyone is fit apart from Kamaldeen.”
Russell Martin provided an update on Kamaldeen Sulemana’s fitness, stating: “Kamaldeen is very, very close to being fit. We have a big squad, and there will be plenty of selection headaches, even just to make the squad, let alone the starting XI.”
Sulemana, known for his “electric” pace, has yet to hit his top form since joining Southampton for a reported £22m in January 2022, earning £40k-a-week. Despite his struggles, the 22-year-old winger still holds plenty of potential and could become a key player for Martin’s side when they need him most. Analyst Ben Mattinson praised Sulemana for his explosive speed, which could provide the attacking spark Southampton desperately needs, having scored only once in their last three games.
