Celtic captain Callum McGregor has shared his thoughts on Rodri’s suggestion that footballers may need to strike due to the demanding schedule.

The Manchester City midfielder has been vocal about the intense football calendar and hinted that players might have to stop playing for change to happen. McGregor, who recently retired from international duty with Scotland to focus solely on his Celtic career, was asked to respond to Rodri’s comments.

“I think that would be pretty difficult to do [go on strike],” McGregor said (via Celtic FC on YouTube). “I’m not Rodri, so you’d have to ask him. But as footballers, it’s a tricky situation. You spend your whole life working to reach this level, to play in as many games as possible—whether it’s representing your country in major tournaments or competing in the Champions League.”

McGregor acknowledged the sacrifices players make but also recognized the entertainment factor, as fans want to see football on TV every few days. This, he said, puts a lot of strain on players, both physically and mentally, making it a “finely balanced issue.”

Despite the lucrative salaries, the pressures of the modern football schedule likely influenced McGregor’s decision to step away from international football. Since focusing solely on Celtic, his performances have notably improved. He has been in great form this season, scoring against Hibernian, St. Mirren, and in the Glasgow derby.

With more regular breaks during international windows, McGregor is able to focus entirely on his club, which is a relief for both Brendan Rodgers and Celtic fans alike.
