Barry Ferguson believes John Gilligan will be thrilled to have his first match as Rangers’ caretaker chairman coinciding with a return to Ibrox.
The 72-year-old has stepped in after John Bennett resigned due to health concerns [Rangers.co.uk].
In his column for the Daily Record on September 19 (page 47), Ferguson expressed that Gilligan will be pleased that his debut game in charge is at home against Dundee.
He commented, “It’s taken such a toll on John Bennett that he had to step down to focus on his health. John Gilligan has taken over as caretaker, and he’ll be glad his first home game aligns with the major reopening of Ibrox.”
The Light Blues fans were quickly losing patience with Bennett during his tenure. The ongoing redevelopment issues, which forced the team to play at Hampden Park this season, along with poor recruitment and a lack of a sustainable transfer model, were significant concerns among supporters.
Performance-wise, the team has struggled, failing to qualify for the Champions League and suffering a disappointing defeat in the first Old Firm derby of the season, increasing the pressure on Philippe Clement.
Clement aims to continue the team’s positive momentum after their recent 1-0 victory over Dundee United, bouncing back from the heavy loss to Celtic at Parkhead two weeks ago.
Fans are hopeful that returning to Ibrox will energize both the players and supporters as the season progresses, and they are optimistic about Gilligan’s ability to make a positive impact during his interim role.
