Middlesbrough completed a late signing of Ipswich Town defender George Edmundson last month.
At the start of the 2024 summer transfer window, Boro’s top priority was securing a new striker. After bringing in Tommy Conway from Bristol City before facing Derby County, it seemed Middlesbrough’s transfer activity was finished.
However, an injury crisis for the second consecutive season forced Michael Carrick into action. Dael Fry and Darragh Lenihan, who missed most of the 2023/24 season due to injuries, suffered new setbacks during pre-season and have yet to feature this campaign.
When Rav van den Berg was injured late in the defeat to Derby, Boro were left with just one fit senior centre-back. As a result, they made a last-minute effort to secure defensive reinforcements in the final week of the transfer window.
Middlesbrough eventually completed a six-month loan deal with Premier League club Ipswich Town for George Edmundson.
George Edmundson names his new Middlesbrough best friend
Despite the short-term nature of the deal, there is already speculation, including from Kieran Scott, that Edmundson could have a longer future at Middlesbrough.
Due to the international break, Edmundson has yet to meet many of his new teammates, as several are away on international duty. Still, he has had the chance to bond with some new faces at Rockliffe Park and revealed to the Northern Echo who his new best friend at the club is.
He said: “It’s been great so far. I’m staying in a hotel with Neto, and we’ve quickly become best friends, even practising Brazilian dancing! The lads have been brilliant. I know Clarkey from previous clubs—he’s a top lad and has taken me under his wing.”
Neto Borges and George Edmundson could start together vs. Preston North End
Neto Borges made his Boro debut just four days after signing, starting in their Championship match against Cardiff City on August 31st. Edmundson, who joined later, was unable to make the trip to Wales but is expected to be in the squad this weekend.
Middlesbrough will face Preston North End in a Championship fixture at 3 pm on Saturday, September 14th.
Carrick has already been advised why Edmundson should perform well against Preston’s forwards. With Van den Berg’s fitness still uncertain, Edmundson could start alongside Matt Clarke, allowing Luke Ayling to return to his preferred right-back position.
Borges is also expected to start at left-back again, as Lukas Engel has struggled early in the season.
