Jensen Weir spent much of his time at Brighton out on loan, with successful spells at Morecambe and Cambridge followed by more challenging experiences at Blackpool and Port Vale. Despite the ups and downs, Wigan Athletic’s Academy Manager, Gregor Rioch, believes these experiences will help Weir reach the potential the club always saw in him before his departure during the administration.
In an interview with *Wigan Today*, Rioch expressed his delight at bringing Weir back to Wigan, describing it as “really special.” He emphasized Weir’s character, saying, “Jensen is such a wonderful young man, from a wonderful family, and it was a great opportunity to bring him back to the north west.”
Rioch highlighted Weir’s tough loan spells at Blackpool and Port Vale last season, noting how they tested the midfielder’s resilience. “I love that about a young player, when it’s not always all-singing, all-dancing… he’s really had to work hard to get through. We’ve brought back an England youth international, our youngest ever player, and I think he’s started very well.”
Rioch also reflected on other former Wigan Academy talents, such as Kyle Joseph, Alfie Devine, and Joe Gelhardt, whose departures helped stabilize the club during its financial troubles. He hinted at the possibility of reuniting with these players in the future, acknowledging their connection to the club: “We know those players, we know what this club means to them… Maybe in the future? Who knows…”
