Exclusive: Ian Gordon on which Hibs manager sacking was mistake and transfer failings

Hibernian FC has gone through several managers under the ownership of the Gordon family, but one managerial decision stands out as a regret. In 2021, Jack Ross was dismissed following a poor run of form—seven losses in nine league matches—which left the team in the lower half of the table. However, many critics of the decision argued that Ross had earned more trust after leading the team to a third-place finish the previous season and guiding them to multiple cup semi-finals and finals.

Ross’s replacement, Shaun Maloney, lasted only four months, and subsequent managers Lee Johnson and Nick Montgomery also struggled to build any lasting success. The late Ron Gordon, the club’s former owner, later acknowledged that sacking Ross was a mistake, a sentiment shared by his son Ian.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Ian Gordon said: “Like my dad said, that was a mistake, and I feel the same. At the time, it was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, and we’ve learned valuable lessons since then.”

He added that constant managerial changes have made it difficult for the club to build stability: “It’s tough when you’re always changing. It’s easy to look back and wish we had done things differently, but we’ve learned a lot through the ups and downs. While we haven’t always made the right decisions, we feel we’re now in a strong position with the current structure in place.”

Ian Gordon, who initially took on a senior recruitment role without clear communication about his responsibilities, faced criticism from fans. He has since explained that their initial approach to recruitment and structure was flawed: “When my father and I first came in, we tried to implement a new way of thinking in terms of recruitment and structure, but we got it wrong. Now, with someone like Malky Mackay’s Scottish experience and David Gray’s deep knowledge of the club, we’re on the right track.”
