Exclusive: Jay Stansfield changes role as Chris Davies makes ‘bold’ goalkeeper call

Chris Davies faces several selection challenges as Birmingham City prepare to face Wrexham in League One.

The Blues are set to host Wrexham, another team vying for the title, at St Andrew’s on Monday night, aiming to make a strong statement early in the promotion race.

Birmingham had a break last weekend due to the postponement of their match against Exeter City for the international break, so most of the squad is well-rested and ready for the game. They have been in good form, securing three wins and a draw in their first four matches.

In contrast, Wrexham played last weekend and topped the league as a result. Phil Parkinson’s side clinched a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town, following previous draws and wins, including games against Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United, Reading, and Wycombe Wanderers.

In terms of team news, Birmingham City has a growing injury list, but the depth gained from a busy summer transfer window provides Davies with plenty of options.

Predicted Birmingham City lineup vs. Wrexham

With a goalkeeping decision and a tactical choice for Jay Stansfield to consider, here’s the expected XI for Birmingham City:

GK – Ryan Allsop
Allsop might make his first league start if Davies decides to bench Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who has made several recent errors for both club and country.

RB – Alfons Sampsted
The Icelandic international has been impressive in his appearances and should start while Ethan Laird is sidelined with injury.

CB – Krystian Bielik
Bielik, with his Premier League experience and captaincy, is likely to be a guaranteed starter.

CB – Christoph Klarer
Klarer has built a strong partnership with Bielik, which many would consider at least Championship standard.

LB – Alex Cochrane
Cochrane’s run of league starts is expected to continue as Lee Buchanan remains out with a calf injury.

CM – Marc Leonard
Leonard’s addition has significantly boosted Birmingham, fitting well into Davies’ system and exuding confidence on the ball.

CM – Paik Seung-ho
Paik has secured a regular spot next to Leonard, despite interest from Championship clubs in the summer.

RW – Jay Stansfield
Stansfield, who started centrally against Walsall, may move to the right wing with May playing through the middle, as Davies prefers his left winger to stay wide.

LW – Emil Hansson
Hansson has been the standout left winger so far this season, and Davies will look for another strong performance from him.

CAM – Willum Willumsson
Willumsson has shown promising quality since joining from Go Ahead Eagles and is expected to start with Luke Harris away on international duty.

ST – Alfie May
As the top scorer in League One last season and leading scorer this term with four goals in four games, May is a sure starter up front.
