Exclusive: Middlesbrough’s Josh Coburn plan revealed with Michael Carrick hope after Millwall injury

Josh Coburn will remain at Millwall for his recovery from injury, with Michael Carrick eager for him to return to the pitch soon.

The striker made an immediate impact at Millwall, scoring on his debut in their first win of the season just before the international break. However, he had to leave the match against Luton Town after only 32 minutes, and manager Neil Harris confirmed that Coburn will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

This setback is disappointing for Coburn, who struggled with a pelvic issue last season that kept him out after January. With the signing of Tommy Conway from Bristol City, Middlesbrough’s management decided to loan out the 21-year-old to help him gain the experience needed for regular senior football.

Carrick shared the club’s plan for Coburn following his injury, stating: “He’s staying down there. We hope being in that environment will help him. We’re here to support him, but it’s beneficial for him to immerse himself there, and we hope he’ll be back soon. He had a fantastic start, and we’re looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch quickly. This is a setback, but he’s resilient and will handle it well.”

Kieran Scott, the head of football, also addressed Coburn’s loan and injury on BBC Tees Sport earlier in the week. He emphasized the need for Coburn to gain experience and physical robustness for the demanding season. “Josh needed to play and adapt to the level. We believe he has the talent, but he needs to get used to playing 38-46 games a season. With Tommy joining, keeping Josh here wouldn’t have been beneficial for him.”

Scott expressed his disappointment over Coburn’s injury but acknowledged that injuries are a part of football. He reiterated that the loan to Millwall was intended to prepare Coburn for a future role at Middlesbrough. “He needs match experience to develop strength and readiness, and we’re hopeful that he’ll return to us even better prepared.”
