Exclusive: “My information is” – Jim White shares big Russell Martin update out of Southampton boardroom

Southampton manager Russell Martin will be given more time to improve the team’s poor form in the Premier League this season, according to talkSPORT presenter Jim White, who reported that the club’s hierarchy “aren’t ready to pull the trigger” on sacking him just yet.

Despite a dismal start, with two wins in the League Cup but none in the league, and defeats against Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and Bournemouth, as well as late dropped points against Ipswich Town, Southampton find themselves joint-bottom of the table with just one point. However, White revealed on Thursday that Martin will be given more time to try and turn things around before any decision is made.

Martin Won’t Get Southampton Sack ‘Just Yet’

He will get a chance to correct a poor start to the season

Reports had emerged that Martin was already on the chopping block when it comes to his job, with the Saints boss having endured a terrible start to the season.

Southampton’s Premier League statistics – Results so far, 2024/25 season
Opponent Venue (H/A) Final score
Newcastle United A 0-1
Nottingham Forest H 0-1
Brentford A 1-3
Manchester United H 0-3
Ipswich Town H 1-1
Bournemouth A 1-3
Southampton A 1-3

A report from Football Insider suggested that Southampton executives were preparing to discuss Russell Martin’s future, claiming he was “fighting” to keep his job on the south coast despite earning some goodwill after leading the team back to the Premier League.

However, White has countered this, stating that the club’s higher-ups are not prepared to terminate Martin’s contract just yet. During an appearance on talkSPORT, the Scottish presenter said:

“My understanding is that those at the top are not ready to make that decision. They still have confidence in Russell. They haven’t lost that trust in him—at least not yet.

“They also mentioned that they hope he can find the strength and determination to make the right choices moving forward.”

Southampton Must Be More Rugged if They Are to Stay Up

The Saints are a side that go for the jugular

If it weren’t for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ challenging start to the Premier League season, Southampton would be stuck at the bottom of the table with just one point. They have the second-highest number of goals conceded in the league and the fewest scored, with only four goals to their name.

There have been standout moments this season, particularly from young talent Tyler Dibling, highlighting the principles that Martin is trying to implement. However, the squad lacks the quality needed to play such an attacking style in what is considered the most difficult league in the world.

**GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic:** Southampton scored 87 points last season with the same number of goals.

In contrast, other promoted teams like Leicester City and Ipswich have managed to stay out of the relegation zone for now. Ipswich has drawn more matches than they’ve lost, while Leicester has only suffered three losses in their first seven games. However, they remain just three points above the drop zone, so a good run of form could significantly enhance their chances of avoiding relegation.

Martin likely understands that he may need to adopt a more pragmatic approach if Southampton is to scrape through games and earn points rather than solely aiming for victories. With the club seemingly willing to give him more time, this could instill confidence in the former Swansea City manager moving forward.
