Olyroos star with ‘huge potential’ crosses F3 Derby divide in major boost to the Champions
Highly regarded full-back Lucas Mauragis from F3 Derby opponent Newcastle Jets has agreed to a three-year contract with Central Coast Mariners.
In the Isuzu UTE A-League, the 22-year-old Olyroo has made 67 appearances, 47 of which have been for the Jets since he made his debut as a teenager and graduated from the school. The final 20 were earned while on loan with Wellington Phoenix during the 2022–2023 season.
In the most recent Isuzu UTE A-League season, Mauragis played 22 league games with the Jets, tallying three assists and two goals.
Although the new addition to the Mariners has the potential to contribute right away, head coach Mark Jackson notes that the player still has a lot of development left in him for the remainder of his three-year deal and beyond.
Lucas joining the team is a delight, according to Jackson.
“We have been keeping an eye on this player for a while now.
Lucas is a young man who wants to learn, improve, and embrace all that we want to do here on the Coast. He has a ton of potential to grow but can also have an instant impact on the squad.
“Having signed Lucas on for the next three seasons, it’s a really exciting time for both of us.”
As Mauragis joins the Mariners for a shot at a third straight Isuzu UTE A-League Championship, he says he plans to surpass the standards set for him by Jackson and the Mariners coaching staff, his colleagues, and new fans.
Mauragis stated, “I am thrilled to start this new chapter of my career with this amazing group of players.”
“I want to push boundaries, go above and beyond what people think I can do, and I want the fans to continue to be excited and successful.”
