Exclusive: ‘Really important’: O’Neil says Wolves need to fix one problem he’s ‘never’ seen at any club before

In light of what the Old Gold need to work on this summer, Gary O’Neil has disclosed what sets his position at Wolves apart from any previous roles he has held at other teams.

After losing 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield to round out the 2023–2024 season, Wolves secured a 14th-place Premier League finish with 46 points.

In his first season at Molineux, Gary O’Neil guided his team to more points than they had the previous season, demonstrating the team’s growth, but there will be a sense that more should have been gained.

The Old Gold won once in April and May, but they only managed to accumulate five points out of a potential thirty from their final ten Premier League games.

When considering the final-day loss to Liverpool, O’Neil had more worries than just the performance on the pitch. It was an awful way to cap off an excellent season at Wolves.

Gary O’Neil says he’s never been at a club with as many players on loan as Wolves

Speaking to the media following the 2-0 loss at Anfield, O’Neil addressed individuals whose futures have been speculative and revealed one area he will be working hard to improve this summer.

The Wolves manager discussed the work that needs to be done to evaluate each player, saying that he has never been at a team with so many players on loan. This was reported by Express and Star.

“There are so many players out on loan at this football club; I’m trying to figure out who will return for preseason. It’s crazy.”

Since many of the players we’ve signed in the past have turned out to be unhelpful and are now playing for other teams, recruitment has been somewhat successful and occasionally unsuccessful over the past few years.

The former manager of Bournemouth then discussed the possibility of deciding which players on loan wish to leave the team, highlighting the significance of the preseason programme.

“All of stuff needs to be cleaned up. For us, it’s crucial to know who is returning, who wants to be with us, and who doesn’t during preseason.

“All right, no issue. We aim to reinvest the money we receive from them as best we can.

“The loan players returning and which ones want to fully commit to playing for Wolves will be a crucial piece of the puzzle.”

This summer, Gary O’Neil will be hired to assess the Wolves team.

With so many players out on loan, it will be hoped that a few gifted players may contribute to the team’s roster or financial standing, as many players are anticipated to be sold before the 2024–2025 season begins.
