Exclusive: Rookie lifts lid on Ryles chat as Gutho exit looms

Isaiah Iongi has stated that he is prepared to take over the Parramatta Eels’ void left by Clint Gutherson in 2025. Iongi signed a contract to join the Parramatta Eels from the Penrith Panthers, the four-time defending champions, which will keep him wearing the blue and gold uniform until 2027. The 21-year-old, who has only played in the NRL, has been assigned to replace Gutherson in the starting lineup. The Eels told Gutherson they would not be giving a contract extension past 2025, therefore on Thursday they gave him freedom to speak with other teams. With rumours that Gutherson may have already played his final game for the Eels, the Dragons are presently in the lead to sign the fullback.Clint Gutherson could be headed for an exit.

Iongi is certain that he is capable of carrying out the duty, even though it carries a lot of weight.

He said, “I feel like I am (ready),” to The Sydney Morning Herald.

“That’s the aim, of course. It requires effort on your part. At Parra, I will have a successful preseason, which will boost my confidence in their eyes.

“Wherever you go, there will always be expectations and obstacles. It all depends on how you respond to it; it’s all part of the game.

Iongi disclosed that his decision to leave Penrith was influenced by a chat with new coach Jason Ryles.

“I’m looking forward to working with him,” he stated.

“You have to work for the slot and give it your all to obtain the opportunity for yourself, just like in any other club. “That’s what I heard him say.”

Isaiah Iongi of the Panthers runs the ball.

For his accomplishment, the Queenslander credited Dylan Edwards, who he was stranded behind in the Panthers squad, for imparting knowledge and experiences.

“To learn from Dyl and then go to Parramatta and learn from him as well, it puts me in a good situation for my future career,” Iongi stated.

“I can look at what they have in the game to put it in mine.”

In the upcoming days, Iongi will make his comeback to the international scene with Tonga when they play Australia and New Zealand in the Pacific Championships.
