Southampton manager Russell Martin could be at risk of losing his position if the Saints are defeated by Bournemouth on Monday at the Vitality Stadium, with Graham Potter being considered as a potential replacement, according to Football Insider.
Southampton has had a poor start to the Premier League season, earning just one point from their first five matches. Their lone point came in disappointing fashion after Sam Morsy scored a late equaliser for Ipswich Town, denying Martin’s team their first win of the season.
Following Everton’s first victory of the campaign—a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace—Southampton now sits in 19th place, only ahead of Wolves on goal difference. As a result, the club’s leadership is reportedly contemplating Martin’s future, and his fate could be decided by the result against Bournemouth.
Martin, who was appointed last season despite some fan opposition, gained praise in the Championship for establishing a clear style of play focused on dominating possession and territory. With a strong squad, he successfully guided Southampton to Premier League promotion by defeating Leeds 1-0 in the playoff final at Wembley.
However, his approach has struggled to adapt in the Premier League. Losses to Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and Manchester United leave Southampton desperate for a win against Bournemouth.
Football Insider suggests that Martin could be sacked if the team fails to secure a result on Monday, with Potter being considered as his successor. Potter, who has been without a job since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023, has reportedly declined offers from clubs like Ajax and Leicester City. A former Southampton player, Potter might be tempted by the vacancy, although the prospect of a relegation battle could deter him.

Seaman Questions Ramsdale’s England Chances
The legendary keeper doesn’t believe the Saints keeper will get called up
Whoever leads Southampton for the remainder of the season will have a top-tier goalkeeper in Aaron Ramsdale at their disposal. However, former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has raised doubts about Ramsdale’s chances of overtaking Jordan Pickford as England’s first-choice keeper while he’s playing for the Saints.
Seaman thinks that being Southampton’s goalkeeper won’t put Ramsdale in a strong position to be favored by England manager Lee Carsley, suggesting that Ramsdale might need a more prominent move to stay in Carsley’s plans. Ramsdale only made six Premier League appearances for Arsenal last season after losing his starting spot to David Raya.
