Exclusive: Southampton star explains exit choice

Samuel Edozie, a Southampton loanee, has stated that while his move to Anderlecht may appear to be a step backwards on paper, he is certain that he will gain from the experience and playing time.

The 21-year-old winger, who left Manchester City in the summer of 2022, made 34 league appearances for the Saints last season, the most of which came off the bench.

In an effort to get regular playing time, Edozie signed a season-long loan with Belgian Pro League team Anderlecht this summer.

Before making the move, Edozie disclosed that he had spoken with Romeo Lavia, a former Southampton player who attended Anderlecht Academy, and the former star gave the Belgian team a lot of praise.

Although the Saints loanee acknowledged that, on paper, his loan move appears to be a step backward in his career, he is optimistic that the experience and consistent playing time would benefit him in the long run.

“Everything happened quite quickly,” Edozie stated to the daily DH in Belgium.

Romeo Lavia, with whom I played, was highly complimentary about Anderlecht when I spoke with him on the phone a few times.

Since I’m from the Premier League, it could appear like a step backwards on paper, but that’s not how I view it.

“This will be a great opportunity for me to get minutes and experience, which will only help me in the future.”

In order for Anderlecht to be considered in Russell Martin’s future plans, Edozie will be looking to make an impression this season.
