Rangers’ financial situation could significantly improve with fresh investment from a new owner and a return to the Champions League, according to finance expert Stefan Borson. Speaking exclusively to *Football Insider*, Borson emphasized the importance of qualifying for European football’s premier club competition as a critical target for the Scottish giants.
Currently, Rangers are competing in the Europa League after being eliminated from the Champions League qualifying rounds. Despite a strong start with a 2-0 victory over Malmo in their first group stage match, the revenue from the Europa League pales in comparison to what Celtic, who qualified for the Champions League, will earn.
Recent speculation has suggested a potential takeover at Ibrox, with reports indicating that American investors are showing interest in purchasing the club. Former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness also mentioned that a “Far East investor” is considering a bid for Rangers.
Borson noted that securing a spot in the Champions League would have a substantial financial impact on Rangers. “If you can get back in the Champions League, it has an outsize impact,” he stated. He highlighted that the Champions League revenues could be transformational, especially given the limited financial return from the domestic TV deal.
Without Champions League participation, Rangers risk falling behind Celtic by £20-£40 million in revenue and profit each year, which could hinder their competitiveness. Borson concluded that the longer Rangers remain outside the Champions League, the more challenging it will be for them to catch up financially.
Stefan Borson emphasized that Rangers’ primary objective must be to return to the Champions League, stating, “They need to get back into the Champions League, and any new owner that can invest such that they achieve that is going to make a big difference. That’s got to be their big target.”
He pointed out that securing a spot in this prestigious competition would not only enhance their financial standing but also bolster their ability to compete with Celtic in the domestic league. The potential influx of revenue from the Champions League could transform Rangers’ financial landscape, allowing them to strengthen their squad and improve their overall competitiveness.
