Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds has expressed significant criticism of his old club following their slow start to the season. Dodds, who won a league title and two cups at Ibrox, feels Rangers lack the quality needed to challenge Celtic for the title this season. He urged manager Philippe Clement to quickly establish a consistent starting XI if Rangers hope to remain competitive.
Speaking to BBC Sportscene, Dodds said: “Based on what I’ve seen, I don’t think they’ll have enough this season. They need to close the gap and keep pressure on Celtic, not make it easy for them.”
Dodds emphasized the need for Rangers to find momentum, adding: “With so many new players, they have to settle on their best 11 and stick with it to gain momentum and win games – but that’s easier said than done.”
Rangers began the season with a goalless draw against Hearts, followed by wins over Motherwell, St Johnstone, and Ross County. However, their progress was halted by a 3-0 defeat to Celtic. Currently, they sit third in the table, five points behind the champions after five games.
Despite the setback, Rangers returned to winning form last weekend with Tom Lawrence’s goal securing a win against Dundee United. Their attention now turns to a League Cup quarter-final against Dundee and an upcoming Europa League opener against Malmo, followed by a home fixture against Hibs.
