Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has defended the Hoops’ tactical approach against Borussia Dortmund, stating that the German side simply had the luck on their side and everything went their way. He refused to acknowledge that the strategy was flawed.
Celtic suffered a humiliating 7-1 defeat at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, with goals from Emre Can, Karim Adeyemi, Serhou Guirassy, and Felix Nmecha securing a dominant win for Borussia Dortmund. Brendan Rodgers’ side was repeatedly exposed by the German team, who showed no mercy in a ruthless performance.
This marks the fourth time Rodgers has conceded six or more goals in a UEFA Champions League match, leading to criticism of his tactics against top European teams. Schmeichel recently commented on the situation, saying, “There’s always debate, but that approach has worked well for us this season. Sometimes, you just face an opponent where everything goes their way.”
He continued, “I’ve been on the winning side of these types of matches too. Sometimes, it feels like everything the opposition hits goes in, and they get all the luck. This result doesn’t reflect who we are as a team. We’ve had a strong start to the season and need to remember that. We just have to accept it and move on.”
Schmeichel and his teammates will be eager to recover as they head to the Highlands for a match against Ross County on Sunday. Celtic, who have had a flawless start to the Scottish Premiership, winning all six games while scoring 20 goals and conceding none, are determined to maintain their perfect record after this European setback.
