Harry Clout has been encouraged to sustain his impressive start to the season in order to secure a future with Pompey.

The 17-year-old left-winger is currently averaging an assist per game for the Academy and has been on the first-team bench for matches against Luton and Middlesbrough in the Championship, reflecting his rising profile.

Clout made a notable impact in Tuesday night’s 3-1 Hampshire Senior Cup defeat to Bashley by assisting Nathaniel Chioma for Pompey’s only goal.

With the Bristol Street Motors Trophy not on the fixture list, it’s currently more challenging for young players to earn first-team opportunities.

Academy lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson is pleased with Harry Clout’s rapid development.

Hudson commented to The News, “Harry showed great awareness with his pass for the goal. Initially, I thought his head was down and his body shape was going one way, but he managed to reverse it effectively.

“For the under-18s, we’re pushing him to create 3-4 chances per game. If he can also get an assist or goal in each match, he’ll put himself in a strong position for a first-team opportunity.

“Currently, he’s averaging an assist per game, which bodes well for his future prospects. He’s had a strong start to the season, and we’ll continue to push him. If he wants to earn a contract, he needs to keep improving.

“This season, Harry has been excellent on the ball. He’s starting to use both feet more effectively, which is a positive development. While his right foot may not be as strong as his left, he’s learning to use it purposefully.

“He’s consistently involved in our attacks, even if they start on the other side. We do remind him daily about the importance of pressing, running, and duelling. It’s a tough part of the game, but essential for success.

“Clout was promoted to train with the first team at the start of pre-season, though he didn’t join them on the Croatia training camp. However, he did feature in several friendlies, including against the Hawks, where he impressed with his energetic left-wing performance.

“Being involved with the first team is fantastic, especially given the lack of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy this season, which limits opportunities for some of our players. We’re working hard every day to prepare players to not only participate in training sessions but to excel in them.”
