Neil Lennon has shared his thoughts on the Old Firm, telling Sky Sports News that he “missed” a hard-fought title campaign between Rangers and Celtic.
Of the last 10 SPFL champions, the Gers have only won the trophy once due to their fierce rivals’ success.
Aside from a league title in 2020/21, their cross-city rivals had dominated for many years.
The season is nearing its close, with only one point separating the two teams. This excited Lennon ahead of the next game at Ibrox on April 7.
On Sky Sports News (6 April), uploaded via X, he stated, “Every game is different.” I’ve been active in these games for the past 25 years as a fan, player, and coach.
“The following one is always the most essential one. There is a lot riding on this. This is the first time we’ve had a title race, which was the standard when I played.
“If Rangers were playing at halftime and we were playing at three o’clock, you were glued to the game to see what you needed to do. Now we’re back at it, and it’s quite thrilling. It is necessary and has been greatly missed. This one, like the title match in England, is perfectly poised.”
What kind of impact would Rangers winning the Old Firm have?
Rangers have historically struggled against Celtic. This has resulted in them winning only one of their last twelve games.
It must be noted that none of those will have been more crucial to the league than the one coming up on April 7.
In the Scottish Premiership rankings, the Old Firm duo are separated by only one point, but Philippe Clement’s team has a game in hand.
This may see the victor of the derby take a solid hold on first place and come one step closer to collecting the trophy at the end of the season.
Rangers will be especially motivated to win all three points given their recent dismal record and league position.
With a win at Ibrox and a game in hand, the Gers have a decent chance of winning the title.
