Fabrizio Romano: Scotland star will become one of the most expensive players in the country when he leaves to finish his move as a 52-cap player

Napoli set to hand midfielder long-term contract after agreeing deal

After reaching a personal terms agreement with the Italian team, Scott McTominay is anticipated to sign a long-term contract with Napoli later today. On Sunday, Manchester United accepted a transfer bid from Napoli for the 27-year-old midfield player.

Reports state that the Scotland international is scheduled to finalize his move to Naples when both clubs have signed the necessary paperwork. As McTominay is expected to cost £25 million plus a 10% sell-on clause to Napoli, he will go down in history as one of the most expensive Scottish football players ever.

Since graduating from the academy, McTominay has played his entire career with Manchester United, although under current manager Erik ten Hag, he has not been able to maintain a regular first-team berth. Although McTominay only has a year left on his Old Trafford deal, the English Premier League team is eager to cash in on him as they need to release players to meet financial fair play regulations and earn money for the signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG.

After placing tenth in Serie A the previous year, Napoli is currently rebuilding under manager Antonio Conte in anticipation of another challenge for the top slots in the Italian league. Sporting director Giovanni Manna was in London last week to conduct transfer business. They intend to recruit Billy Gilmour, a midfield player from Scotland, after agreeing to pay the Brighton player approximately £12,000. The Scottish market has recently been penetrated by Italian clubs;

Lewis Ferguson, whose outstanding performances with Bologna last season earned him the title of league’s finest midfield player, is one example of this. McTominay is expected to sign a big contract with Napoli and establish himself as a mainstay in the first squad.
