Sue Smith has labelled the overhanging points deduction for Everton as “farcical” as the club wait to have their appeal against the punishment heard.
The Toffees have been handed a further two-point deduction due to a second breach of PSR, though the club could be waiting until 6 May to have their case heard after appealing against the decision. This could mean that Sean Dyche and his players are preparing for their penultimate match of the season against Sheffield United (11 May) when they learn their Premier League fate.
Speaking live via Sky Sports on Saturday (13 April, 12:49pm), Smith said: “I think the fact that Everton got a big three points against Burnley, then had two taken away from them, that must be difficult as a player.
“They’ve been through this before – last time it galvanised them. That’s what they’ll want again this time, players just need to focus on the games. The uncertainty around the club, the uncertainty around the takeover, the appeal… That must be difficult to just focus on their job.
“It is farcical come the end of the season, not just for Everton and Nottingham Forest, but also for the other teams around them, not knowing. It has an impact on everybody – that’s the farcical side to it.”
Everton must wait until the final moment to learn Premier League fate
The uncertainty surrounding Everton’s number of points is no help to anyone, especially the Toffees as they continue to battle against relegation for the third successive season, nor are the takeover worries.
Luton, Brentford and Forest have every right to be annoyed with the Premier League’s process, as do the Evertonians, with nobody sure where teams are actually situated in the table.
If Everton are to find out whether their most recent points deduction will stand just two matches before the end of the season, teams around them are likely to riot, especially if the Blues are given any of the points back.
All the players at Goodison Park can do, like Smith says, is to do their jobs and win as many points as possible. With matches against Forest, Brentford, Luton and Sheffield United remaining, Everton must take their future into their own hands, instead of waiting for the appeal hearing.
