Paul Heckingbottom, the manager of Preston North End, signed a player while he was at Barnsley. The player is now available.
Ryan Kent left Liverpool to join the Tykes on a season-long loan in 2016. Heckingbottom said he was ‘fearless’ when he was introduced to the media, and he was a teenager at the time. Under Heckingbottom, he went on to participate in 47 games for Oakwell, contributing to six goals.
Kent is now a free agent eight years after Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce tore up his contract. According to a statement: “To notify you that, by mutual consent, the contract with Ryan Kent, a member of the Professional Football A Team, has been terminated. We show it to the whole population.
The 27-year-old was playing under former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, but he didn’t get many chances to start for the first team. He only played one game under the Portuguese manager, starting against FC Lugano in a Champions League qualifying match at the end of July.
Kent had not been included in the match day rosters for any of their seven league games and was not registered for their Europa League squad. He was supposed to stay at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium for four years, but his contract was terminated early.
Kent’s contract was terminated following the transfer window, thus he will have to wait until January to find a new team. Heckingbottom is back on the market after apparently wanting to reunite with Kent while he was at Sheffield United.
Kent has performed in Britain for the majority of his career. After graduating from Liverpool’s academy, he left after just one game. Before being officially signed by the Gers in 2019, the Oldham native attacker had loan stints at Coventry City, Barnsley, Freiburg, Bristol City, and Rangers.
The legendary Steven Gerrard of Anfield signed him, and he helped Rangers win the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup. In 2022, he also helped the team make it to the UEFA Europa League final.
