When Plymouth Argyle travels to Cardiff City in the Championship tomorrow, Wayne Rooney will be suspended for one match.

Following the match against Blackburn Rovers at Home Park on October 5, the manager of the Pilgrims agreed to three Football Association charges and was subsequently fined £5,500 by an Independent Regulatory Commission. Rooney will be able to speak with assistant head coach Pete Shuttleworth in the visitors’ technical area, even if he will probably be watching from the directors’ box in Cardiff.

On The Overlap podcast, the 38-year-old later revealed to Gary Neville, a former teammate from Manchester United and England, that he kicked a bottle on his way to the players’ tunnel, unintentionally striking an Argyle supporter in the Lower Mayflower Grandstand.

Morgan Whittaker’s winning goal in the seventh minute of extra time helped Argyle defeat Blackburn, and Rooney walked out to applaud his teammates after the opposing team and match officials had left the pitch. This led to the third of the three FA accusations.

Before yesterday’s match against Cardiff, Rooney told reporters at Home Park, “That was a genuine error actually, I thought once the referee had left the pitch you were allowed back on.”

At 2:00 PM today, Argyle released the following statement: “Head coach Wayne Rooney was fired against Blackburn Rovers after the Football Association charged him with using inappropriate, abusive, and/or derogatory language towards a match official.

Additionally, it was claimed that he had behaved inappropriately and/or violently after being fired and that he had acted inappropriately by returning to the field of play after being fired. A £5,500 punishment and a one-match touchline ban have been handed by the Independent Regulatory Commission after Rooney acknowledged the charges.

We now recognise and respect the FA’s decision, and Wayne will serve his touchline ban immediately during Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship game against Cardiff City. The club won’t be making any more comments.
In their own statement, the FA stated: “After a hearing, an independent Regulatory Commission imposed Wayne Rooney’s sanctions after he acknowledged to this charge. In due time, its written justifications for them will be released.

When Steven Schumacher had to watch from the Mayflower Grandstand as his Pilgrims’ team lost 2-0 to Port Vale in a League One match at Home Park in December 2022, it was the last occasion an Argyle manager was given a touchline ban. In addition, he received a £1,000 punishment for remarks he made about a match referee after a 2-2 draw with Burton Albion.
