As such, according to a recent report from Football Insider, the Gers are ‘stepping up’ plans to sack the former Club Brugge boss – though his departure is not expected to take place immediately.
Nevertheless, his position at the Ibrox Stadium is thought to be ‘no longer secure’ and he will need to turn Rangers’ fortunes around sooner, rather than later. Following their surprising defeat at the weekend, Rangers are now six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table.
The 2024/25 season has not gone according to plan for the Gers so far, having won five, drawn one and lost two of their eight games in the league at this point. They have struggled to score goals when compared to their title rivals – Rangers have scored 12 goals in the division, while Celtic’s tally doubles this.
Additionally, some of their summer signings have not hit the ground running as well as Clement may have liked. Players such as Nedim Bajrami, Robin Propper and Mohamed Diomande have thus far failed to meet expectations.
However, Clement is under contract at Rangers until the summer of 2028 – due to this, it could be an expensive decision for the Gers to make if they decide to sack the Belgian any time soon. He was given this new deal in the summer, which would seem to indicate the board’s utmost trust in him. Despite this, recent shake-ups behind the scenes renders this new deal less secure than it may initially seem.
After the game on Sunday, Clement said [via Sky Sports]: “I don’t want to go into that because I don’t want excuses about pitches, winds, whatever. We need to focus on ourselves, on the players, on the new players coming in, to get them at their best level, focus on the players who were here, to get to their best level, and to play better than we did today.
“I was not pleased with that game in the first half. The second half was much better, but then you get this goal against. In the end, if you win this game, which was possible in the second half, and you scored the goal, you can have a totally different feeling.
“But we didn’t do enough to get that feeling, so we need to learn from that and be stronger on Thursday and the Sunday after, and the weeks to come. We have 30 games to go, so it’s always disappointing to lose points because we want to win all the games. So we’re focused on that.”
