Football Labasa stopper gets call-up

Joji Vuakaca, the goalie for Labasa football, has been rising quickly lately.

The 26-person training squad of Fiji has called up the former age group international in anticipation of the OFC Nations Cup, which takes place in Vanuatu in June.

Aydin Mustahib, Atunaisa Naucikidi, and Isikeli Sevanaia Junior will face challenge from Vuakaca.

In the absence of the seasoned Akuila Mateisuva, the youthful goalkeepers will contend for the final three spots in the squad.

Labasa’s normal stopper Simione Tamanisau hasn’t been available, but Vuakaca has been playing at his best lately.

Ironically, Tamanisau coaches the goalkeeper for the national squad as well.

The New Zealand All Whites are one of eight teams competing in the Nations Cup.

Fiji is combined with Tahiti, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea.

On June 16, Rob Sherman’s team takes on PNG in the opening game.

In the meantime, this Saturday at Subrail Park, Vuakaca and Extra Labasa will play Ba in the Digicel Fiji Premier League.

Extra Rewa takes against Nadi in a different game on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

At the Fiji FA Academy field at Vatuwaqa on Sunday, there will be a double header between Flick Suva and Lautoka at 1pm and Nasinu versus Navua at 3pm.

Nadroga and Tailevu Naitasiri meet at Ratu Cakobau Park at 1pm.

On Mirchi FM, you can listen to live commentary of the Rewa-Nadi match.
