Former Blackpool, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic and Gillingham star lands League Two manager’s

Michael Flynn, a former midfielder for Blackpool, appears to be returning to football management.

The Robins have extended an offer for Flynn to take over as head coach, according to Jon Palmer, the GloucestershireLive writer covering Cheltenham Town. On Monday, he and two other applicants had interviews for the position, and the Welshman was the chosen one.

Four months have passed since Swindon Town dismissed the 43-year-old of his responsibilities. Gary Johnson, a former manager of Bristol City and Yeovil Town, just took on the role of director of football at Whaddon Road, and he thinks Flynn is the ideal candidate to replace Darrel Clarke.

Last week, Clarke departed the team to accept the position at Barnsley. After moving to Gloucestershire in September to take Wade Elliott’s place, the 47-year-old was unable to stop the team from being relegated and lost out on safety by two points.

Flynn will now guide Cheltenham forward. Flynn has managed in League Two with Newport County and Walsall. Over the past seven years, he has managed Newport and led the team to two play-off championships.

His playing career lasted 19 years, starting at Newport County and concluding with the Exiles. In 2004, he joined Blackpool on loan from Wigan Athletic and played in six league matches. Flynn moved to Gillingham and stayed there for two years before making the permanent move to Blackpool.

As a player with Blackpool, he assisted in the team’s 16th-place results in League One under Colin Hendry and their 19th-place result in the Championship under Simon Grayson. He made appearances for teams like Bradford City, Darlington, and Huddersfield Town among his 440 football games.
