Southampton have managed just one goal in their first four Premier League matches, with their lone strike coming in a 3-1 defeat to Brentford. Despite the struggles, Russell Martin remains committed to his playing philosophy, but his approach is drawing increased scrutiny.
Former Southampton player Perry Groves has voiced concerns, insisting that Martin needs a plan B. Speaking on talkSPORT’s Sunday Session, Groves said, “If you’re not going to change, then every team playing against you knows exactly how you are going to play.” He highlighted Southampton’s vulnerability when playing out from the back, with defenders Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek stepping into midfield, often leading to mistakes.
Groves emphasized that tactical flexibility is crucial, stating, “As a coach, you have to change. You have to have a plan B.”
Southampton’s next two Premier League fixtures are against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth. If they remain winless heading into a clash with Arsenal at the Emirates, the pressure on Martin could significantly increase.
