Ontario pumps $70M into Collingwood water plant expansion helping to pave way for new homes
An architectural rendering has been released for the proposed Water Treatment Plant expansion in Collingwood, Ontario, which is currently out for tender to three pre-qualified general contractors as of June 22, 2023. The project, with an estimated cost of $270 million—almost double the initial budget—is a joint effort between Collingwood and New Tecumseth, who have shared treated water services for the past 25 years.
The Ontario government is contributing $70 million to the project, which will play a critical role in supporting future growth in the region. This expansion is particularly important as it will help facilitate the development of new homes and other vital infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and businesses. Ontario’s government is working closely with Collingwood and New Tecumseth to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place for responsible and sustainable development.
Collingwood Mayor Yvonne Hamlin emphasized the significance of the project, noting that it represents the largest investment in the history of both Collingwood and New Tecumseth. She acknowledged the tremendous effort that has been invested in reaching this stage of the project, reflecting the importance of this expansion for the region’s long-term growth and development.
Additionally, Saunderson, a government representative, highlighted the importance of collaborating with local municipalities to ensure that the infrastructure meets the needs of a growing population. The project’s focus is not just on water treatment but on creating a solid foundation for the region’s future, ensuring that essential services can keep pace with increasing demands.
Town officials are continuing to explore various funding options to finance the remaining portion of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2031. The expansion will be a major step toward enhancing the region’s water treatment capacity, enabling it to support the anticipated growth in housing and other key sectors. This investment will significantly shape the future of Collingwood and New Tecumseth, ensuring sustainable and responsible development for years to come.
