John Burns, a 22-year-old Celtic fan, tragically lost his life in a motorway accident after mistakenly boarding the wrong bus following Celtic’s match against Hearts. It is believed he was dropped off in Carlisle, where he was later struck by a vehicle on the M6 on the evening of September 14.
John, a father-of-one from Glasgow, has been remembered by his family and the wider football community. His mother, Marion Bell, expressed her heartbreak, and his girlfriend, Rachael Mowles, shared a poignant photo of John holding their baby son in a Celtic strip. Fellow fans have echoed sentiments that “no one should go to a football match and not return home.”
The Celtic Fan Group has called for a minute’s applause during Celtic’s upcoming match against Slovan Bratislava in John’s memory, asking supporters to join in on the 23rd minute to honor his life.
Tributes have poured in from those who knew him, with friends and family sharing their grief over his untimely death. A fundraiser has also been set up to support John’s family, aiming to ease the financial burden during this difficult time.
Cumbria Police are continuing to investigate the incident and have asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area to come forward.
