Despite having been somewhat uneven in his first three NFL seasons, Trevor Lawrence seems unlikely to let that deter him from rising to become one of the highest-paid players in league history. The contract extension negotiations between Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars have been “progressing nicely,” according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on “SportsCenter” on Sunday. The Jaguars appear willing to commit to the former first overall selection, even though Lawrence is only in his fourth year of his rookie contract and will cost them more than $50 million annually.
It’s not necessary to get it done right now because he’s only three years into his rookie contract, but Jacksonville is reportedly rather dedicated to making this happen. Fowler stated, as Bleacher Report’s Tyler Conway transcribed.
“They are all in on Lawrence, they’ve been talking, but this will also be a deal above that $50 million range.” Last season, Lawrence had trouble keeping the ball safe. He ran for 339 yards and four scores while throwing for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Lawrence committed 21 turnovers, something the Jaguars have stated they want him to work on reducing in the offseason.
Lawrence’s overall statistics declined in 2022, as he only had 8 interceptions and 25 touchdown passes. The Jaguars, who finished 9-8 the previous campaign and were not in the postseason, don’t appear to be too concerned. It is more likely a question of when than whether Lawrence receives a significant extension.
Lawrence’s 2024 salary is projected to be $5.4 million, and Jacksonville will definitely exercise his 2025 fifth-year option. Although Lawrence and the Jaguars still have plenty of time to work out a new contract, one recent quarterback contract should serve as a warning that the price will only go up.
