‘I can’t’: Ally McCoist is convinced over who is going to win tonight – Everton or Liverpool

Everton face Liverpool tonight in the 244th Merseyside derby, in what promises to be a hotly-contested affair.

After all, whilst the visitors will remain heavy favourites due to their overwhelming quality, the steely resolve of this Sean Dyche outfit, playing in front of a floodlit Goodison Park, could provide a great equaliser for the Toffees.

They have not won a home derby since 2010, but can take solace from the fact they have snatched a draw from two of the last 11 league fixtures played at home.

And yet, despite that favourable figure, pundits remain largely aligned with the Reds.

Ally McCoist actually has one criticism of Liverpool despite 5-1 win

Ally McCoist makes Merseyside derby prediction

Speaking live on talkSPORT (24/04, 08:38 am) earlier this morning, the two hosts briefly combed over tonight’s Merseyside derby.

Alan Brazil posed a valid but somewhat dismissive question to Ally McCoist, as he stated: ‘Can you see anything but a Liverpool win here?’

Unfortunately, the Scotsman was equally dour in assessing Everton’s chances: ‘Great result at the weekend for Everton, clearly, against Forest. But to answer your question: I can’t.

‘And I know their record against Liverpool at home isn’t dreadful I don’t think, I just think the importance of Liverpool winning tonight… we’ve already mentioned the importance for Everton, I get that. Effectively, another three points tonight would be them just about absolutely fine. So I’m not underestimating the importance of the game for Everton.

‘I just think Liverpool have to win the game. Because I’ve already said, for Liverpool to win the league they need City and Arsenal to lose points. They’ve got to win every game.’

Everton can upset Liverpool’s title charge

Unsurprisingly, there are few giving Dyche’s men a chance at all tonight.

And looking through the form guide, that is no surprise really.

The hosts have won just two Premier League games since December, although they did both come in their last three games, suggesting a recent upturn.

Liverpool, however, have lost just twice in the league in 2024.

Not only will those statistics be hard for the Toffees to overcome, but they must also override the emotion sure to be pulsing through the away changing room, with tonight set to be Jurgen Klopp’s last derby before his summer departure.

Having already outlined his expectations for a rousing Goodison Park atmosphere, there is hope that, should they get a slice of fortune and remain resolute in defence, it could mark a historic night where Everton prove all the doubters wrong.
