During the 2009 AFL season, Jake King, a former Richmond star, was assaulting then-coach Terry Wallace. His teammates had to intervene to stop him.
At Punt Road, morale was at an all-time low as Wallace lost the playing group’s support.
Despite their on-field struggles, Wallace refused to select the combative half forward wing in his senior team, which put King, a cult icon among Richmond supporters, on the outside.
On the Footy & Friends podcast, King declared, “I was going to f*****g kill him.”
King continued by explaining that the seasoned coach believed that defenders Jordan McMahon and Alex Rance, together with midfielder Andrew Raines, were more valuable players than he was.
King therefore believed that as he was a star for Coburg at the VFL level, he would once more be considered for selection when the three were finally hurt or dropped.
He was mistaken.
“Well, can I have a game now?” I asked Wallace. “No” he replies, King said.
