Albion last week confirmed Italian firm Macron as the club’s new kit manufacturer – bringing to an end six solid years with Puma.
Macron, an ever-growing designer with a footprint across clubs on the continent, have a tough act to follow on from the creditable efforts of the predecessor. Albion’s new supplier’s headquarters are based in Bologna, the Italian province where owner Shilen Patel holds a small stake in the premier club. That is understood to be colincidental, though, and Albion talks with Marcon had been taking place for 12 months prior to the ink drying on the deal.
Puma, which replaced Adidas after a disappointing seven-year run, accomplished a lot of things right while providing Baggies stripes and memorable away kits, particularly those with yellow and green stripes. All bespoke, not off-the-shelf templates.
In 2022/23, the Albion great’s Legacy Trust collaborated on a Cyrille Regis-inspired away jersey, while last season’s designs included a tribute to FA Cup-winning icon Jeff Astle. All of these exquisite touches improved Puma’s reputation. We’ve taken a look at some of the club’s most famous uniforms since 2000. 2000/01 and 2001/02 The Albion home kit from the turn of the 2000 will remain iconic for fans of all generations.
The Patrick strip with red piping on the collar is associated with the beginning of Gary Megson’s tenure at The Hawthorns and his promotion to the Premier League.
Donning the classic West Bromwich Building Society sponsorship, a deal which would cease two years later, the home strip was accompanied by another memorable away top in the 2000/2001 season, a collectors’ item away strip, with a blue hoop across a yellow shirt. 2005/06 By this time the Baggies were under the sponsorship of T Mobile and this season threw up three classic strips. In a rare move away from normal tradition Albion, now under a deal with Diadora, went with a low v-cut top accompanied with a blue collar.
West Bromwich Albion fans will remember their kits from the 2009/10 season, which featured a Premier League yellow away kit to complement the usual home colors and a red away kit the following year. However, there were two years without a main sponsor, with one-day sponsors including Bathams Brewery, Blue Square, Victor Chandler, Sbobet, esprit UK, and Leons Coach Travel.
2020/21 Albion’s last Premier League games produced two classics. The away kit reverted back to the customary yellow and green that fans have come to appreciate. The third kit, in red and yellow, was slightly different but had previously existed. And the home kit was the classic, but with a throwback touch. Fans referred to it as the bar code cut, and it was a throwback to Albion’s identical design from the early 1990s.
