I’m happy for that chapter to be closed’ – Podcaster thrilled as Aston Villa exit deal sealed

Morgan Sanson has departed Aston Villa to join OGC Nice on a permanent transfer and Ty Bracey believes it is a move which suits all parties.

The French club confirmed the signing via their official website (15 May) after the midfielder spent the season on loan in Ligue 1.

Sanson joined the Villans from Marseille in 2021 but has failed to nail down a starting role under Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard or Unai Emery.

Villa podcaster Bracey has suggested that this move suits him and the Villans as the club looks to shift fringe players from their squad this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “He wasn’t in Emery’s plans or anybody’s plans whoever has managed him.

“He’s not been the right fit at Villa for whatever reason, you never know what goes on behind closed doors. He’s moved on now and it’s another player off the books and one that I’m happy that’s off the books.

“Morgan Sanson is one of them, it’s never quite worked out for him and to get him off the books is good to free up the wage bill with it being really high. I’m happy for that chapter to be closed.“

What went wrong for Morgan Sanson at Aston Villa?

Smith signed the Frenchman in a deal which was met with plenty of acclaim and excitement from supporters in January 2021.

Sanson only made 24 appearances in B6 [FotMob] across three different seasons which were hampered by injury and a lack of opportunities.

He scored just one goal for the club in the hugely disappointing defeat to Stevenage in the FA Cup third round last season.

Due to a lack of regular minutes, the midfielder was afforded two loan spells away from the club. First, he joined Strasbourg before joining Nice this campaign.

With two goals and three assists across 24 starts and five substitute appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, he rediscovered some sort of form.

Sanson never quite found his feet in the Premier League and was cast aside by other players’ form and the changes in manager.

A move away permanently brings money in for Villa’s balance sheet while giving Sanson a home to play his best football.
