In response to Birmingham City’s interest, West Brom contacts the Sheffield Wednesday player.

West Brom are preparing for another season in the Championship this summer

Last season, Carlos Corberan’s team were in the top six, but they were unable to advance past Southampton in the play-offs, who went on to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday narrowly avoided relegation with Danny Rohl turning their fortunes around, whilst Birmingham City suffered relegation on the final day and are gearing up for League One football.

The 30-year-old Windass, who played 25 league games for the Owls last season, has been a consistent presence at Hillsborough since joining in 2020. His performances have helped Sheffield Wednesday return to the second division, but it now looks as though an exit is imminent. Talks about a contract renewal appear to have stalled, and it looks less and less likely that he will sign a new deal with Sheffield Wednesday this summer. Birmingham City has long been interested in Windass, but the Baggies have recently intervened and gotten in touch with Windass’ representatives to find out how interested he would be in moving to The Hawthorns.

Fierce competition

The 30-year-old is a proven Football League talent. The attacking midfielder can play several roles in the middle of the park and he would be a handy addition for most clubs in the second and third tier.

Birmingham City will be attempting to get out of League One on the first try, while West Brom will be battling for promotion to the Premier League.

Since Windass has never played in the top division of football before, the chance to play in that level of play could be enough to entice him to join West Brom this summer. Nevertheless, it’s still unclear which team will prevail in this competition, so it’s definitely one to watch.

Flying up

Rohl did an incredible job with the Owls last season. The German boss has all the momentum in the world behind his side at the moment and their business so far this summer has been promising. Losing Windass would be a blow for them, but Sheffield Wednesday survived without him for nearly half of last season and it wouldn’t be the end of the world for their hopes of success next season. The Owls are the team to watch currently as they could fly up the Championship table after having been so close to relegation last time around.
