BUSINESS CITY, Colorado On Wednesday night, the Colorado Rapids (7-7-4, 25 points) will travel to the Midwest to play St. Louis CITY SC (3-5-9, 18 points) in a midweek game. At 6:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV—Free, Altitude Sports Radio 950AM—the game will kick off at CITYPARK. At the halfway point of the 2024 MLS Season, both teams are gearing up for their second of three games in a span of eight days as they search for vital points. In the Western Conference, Colorado is now ranked sixth, while St. Louis is in 11th place, well outside of the postseason picture. The competition on Wednesday will be the first
The match on Wednesday will be the first between these two this season and the third overall since St. Louis’ first-ever Major League Soccer season last year. Colorado lost the first match 2-0 at CITYPARK in 2023, but in the second meeting, at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, they held the eventual top seed in the Western Conference to a 1-1 tie. The Rapids approach the midweek game on the heels of a commanding performance at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park against Austin FC this past Saturday. The Rapids won 2-0 with to goals from Cole Bassett and Rafael Navarro, as well as strong defense and goalkeeping from Zack Steffen.
In 2024, Bassett’s sixth goal of the campaign tied a single-season career best in goals, while Steffen recorded his first home clean sheet. After losing to FC Dallas 2-0 away from home in their most recent game, St. Louis will try to recover. This season, the team has gone winless on the road in the Major League Soccer, dropping their record to 0-3-5 away from home. St. Louis has had the most success at CITYPARK in 2024, despite their problems with the roads.
St. Louis has turned CITYPARK into a difficult location for any MLS team to play, as was the case with the previous season. Building on their Western Conference record of 11 wins at home the previous year, the team is 3-2-4 at home this season. Even though the team has been successful at home, they have recently faced some difficulties. Since St. Louis has lost all three of its home games (0-2-1), Colorado has a chance to prolong the opposition’s losing streak.
Anthony Markanich will be a well-known figure on the other end. The Northern Illinois University defender, who was taken 26th overall by the Rapids in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, played for the team for two seasons, appearing in 17 games across all competitions. Furthermore, these two head coaches have experience working together; from 2018 to 2020, Chris Armas and Bradley Carnell were members of the New York Red Bulls’ technical staff.
