In the Championship play-off final, Southampton overcame Leeds United to win promotion and a spot back in the Premier League.
Russell Martin, the leader of Southampton, called Ryan Fraser’s contribution to his promotion-winning team “incredible” after Fraser played 70 minutes in their victory over Leeds United in the play-off final. Fraser, who joined St Mary’s on loan at the start of the campaign, helped the Saints guarantee they returned to the Premier League right away by scoring six goals in the Championship.
Southampton’s victory over Leeds in the play-off final, which was sealed at Wembley by a goal from former Magpies striker Adam Armstrong, guarantees their return to the Premier League and raises the possibility that they may sign Fraser this summer on a permanent basis. In addition to expressing his desire to recruit Fraser, Martin was questioned by Neil Warnock on the winger’s role in that Wembley victory, as Martin forced his erstwhile international teammate to play in an unusual wingback role.
Neil Warnock exclaimed, “I thought you fully justified it,” to an ecstatic Martin. Ryan Fraser is my favourite. How you got him to tackle like that is beyond me.
Martin said, “There were many such evenings in the Scotland squad where me, him, and Matt Ritchie would generally finish up wrestling or fighting on some level. I am aware of his strength. He is known to be combative.
“Many asked us why we signed Wee Man. As a teammate, I knew him well, and I know that he has had a difficult few seasons.
He’s been amazing for us. He has been amazing not only in his performances but also in his daily workouts.
Fraser publicly expressed his wish to join Southampton permanently after being shut out of first-team affairs at St James’ Park in the later half of the 2022–2023 season: “I think my time at Newcastle is done now.” Fraser acknowledged in January.
If there is a possibility that you will return, I don’t think you should be placed on loan. As everyone has witnessed, the second part of the last season was difficult.
“My goal in coming here was to support the squad in whatever way I could. That has been making an effect in games after coming off the bench. It feels so fantastic to support the team.
