‘Intense’ head coach Nelson Jardim has made it clear to Newport County AFC that they need to pass with purpose as they prepare for the upcoming League Two season.

With just days remaining until their opener against Cheltenham, the Exiles are gearing up with a revamped squad, a new playing style, and a different manager at the helm.

Jardim has been coaching the team for just over a month, having been appointed after the departure of former manager Graham Coughlan. The Portuguese coach has been tasked with implementing a more possession-based style of play and is working with a squad that includes 10 new summer signings.

Midfielder Bryn Morris, who has had limited training time due to injury, commented on Jardim’s approach: “He is trying to get his ideas across. It’s clear from the start that he wants to play ‘pure’ football.

“He is intense when it comes to maintaining possession, and we hope that good things will come from it.

“I hope we can have more touches and dominate games in terms of possession, but ultimately, it’s about results.

“There’s no point in having a lot of touches and passes if we don’t score goals.

“From training and games, we’re looking more progressive, and Nelson emphasizes the importance of making penetrating passes to get into the final third and create chances.”

Bryn Morris had an outstanding first season at Newport County, featuring in all 57 games across all competitions, starting all but one, where he came on at halftime during the EFL Trophy match against Cheltenham.

The 28-year-old was a regular starter under former manager Graham Coughlan and aims to be just as crucial under Nelson Jardim, although he might be a doubt for the season opener.

“Different managers have different philosophies and styles of play,” said Morris, who led Newport in average passes last season. “You respect that, and there isn’t a right or wrong way to play. It’s about getting results.”

As one of the more experienced players in a squad that has recently focused on recruiting young talent, Morris acknowledges the importance of this opportunity for up-and-coming players.

“We’ve all been in that position,” said Morris, who began his career at Middlesbrough. “When you’re young, all you ask for is a chance. It looks like people are getting those chances here, and now it’s up to them to take advantage of it.”
