Ipswich Town are heading for the Premier League after a remarkable 2023/24 campaign.
Kieran McKenna has led the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions, rising from the Championship in 2nd place as Leicester City won the title. Leeds United and Southampton will battle it out in the play-off final to join Town and the Foxes in the top-flight.
Such success has seen McKenna draw regular interest, but with Roberto De Zerbi leaving Brighton, the Seagulls’ admiration could be about to step up.
Now, it has been claimed that Ipswich Town already have a potential replacement in mind should they lose their highly coveted boss.
TalkSPORT reports that Luton Town manager Rob Edwards is on the radar at Portman Road as a potential McKenna heir. If the Northern Irishman opts to move to Brighton, the former Watford and Forest Green boss is viewed as an ‘ideal candidate’.
Edwards has impressed with the Hatters but wasn’t able to lead them to safety after a remarkable rise of their own.
Of course, Ipswich Town will be determined to hold onto McKenna. He’s been the key leading figure in their stunning rise and has written himself into club folklore
You have to think the Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Premier League massively increases their chances of retaining him too. Offers from teams now in the same league will have to be very tempting for him to take the opportunity to move on.
Brighton are an ambitious, forward-thinking club though and a like-minded boss such as McKenna seems as though he would be a great fit.
Ipswich will be hoping he remains loyal though as the Seagulls look to replace De Zerbi swiftly.
In the event of an exit…
Should McKenna be tempted away from Ipswich Town though, many will agree that Luton Town boss Edwards would be a great replacement for the club to pursue this summer.
He might not have kept the Hatters up but his work at Kenilworth Road has seem him impress in a big way. He’s had Luton playing some good football while conducting himself admirably off the pitch in some tough situations.
Edwards has proven himself as a real leader and following Luton’s relegation, it will not be a surprise if he’s linked with several vacant positions in higher leagues.
Time will tell if the Ipswich Town post opens up though as McKenna draws admiring glances of his own.
