The NFL’s youngest group of starting quarterbacks is from the AFC South. On June 27, Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis will turn 25, making him the oldest player in the group. Anthony Richardson (age 22), C.J. Stroud (age 22), and Trevor Lawrence (age 24) complete the group. Among the younger group, Lawrence and Stroud have distinguished themselves in their early careers. Lawrence recently agreed to a record-breaking $275 million, five-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former first overall pick may be headed for a fantastic career after posting seasons with over 4,000 passing yards and organizing a 27-point comeback in the 2022 playoffs.
For a rookie quarterback, Stroud’s season was among the greatest in history. Before the 2024 season, the Houston Texans were a bottom-of-the-league team; he helped turn them into a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks recently appeared on “Move The Sticks,” and Jeremiah had nothing but love for both quarterbacks. “I hope that when Trevor Lawrence returns to health, he narrows the gap with Stroud and that becomes the next great quarterback competition in the NFL.” Since these men will be occupying these locations for an extended period of time, Jeremiah stated.
Reporters Maura Carey of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Joey Aliberti of the Houston Texans talk about the long- and short-term potential of the combo and what a rivalry between the two might entail.
Which player takes the bigger step in 2024?
In 2023, Lawrence didn’t act in the way that most people had anticipated. In reality, he regressed from his 2022 stats of 25 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Having been evidently injured for a large portion of the previous season, he must now demonstrate his $55 million annual salary, which ties him for the highest of any player in NFL history.
All of this is being said because, when it comes to this response, everyone will assume Stroud, and I am one of those people. It will just be much closer than many anticipate, in my opinion. Already a star, Stroud has one more season in the NFL and the support of Stefon Diggs in 2024. — Aliberti
During his debut season, Stroud established an extremely high standard for himself, recording the most outstanding figures of any first-year quarterback in modern NFL history. It’s difficult to argue against the former Ohio State quarterback with Diggs and Tank Dell back. Stroud continues to bask in the glory from the previous year, but Lawrence and the Jaguars do not enjoy the same advantage.
The Jaguars provided Lawrence 275 million reasons why he needs to have a breakthrough year in 2024, which has put pressure on him. The addition of Brian Thomas Jr., Gabe Davis, and Devin Duvernay to the receiving group should make this season similar to Lawrence’s 2022 campaign. Like any great rivalry, the Jaguars and Texans split 1-1 in 2024. While every quarterback is positioned for success, I believe that Stroud makes the greater leap because of Houston’s offensive line and the consistency of the receiving group (apart from Diggs) coming into the season. — Carey
