‘I’ve heard…’: Pompey boss readies for Southsea Common celebrations

John Mousinho has advised his Pompey winners to enjoy the occasion as they prepare for the League One championship celebrations.

Thousands of Blues fans are expected to throng on Southsea Common on Sunday as the city pays tribute to the League One champions.

And Mousinho has urged his team to soak up every moment of what promises to be a memorable afternoon for both the football club and the city.

‘It’s good for us to envision these things, but if you ask me to imagine Barnsley before it happened, you may think about it, but nothing can really prepare you for the time.

‘I believe the players should simply enjoy the moment. These things don’t happen very often.

‘Hopefully they will for the football team again, like they do for individuals, but you never know when they will show up.

‘It’s just living it; things happen really quickly. I’m sure many would like to revisit Barnsley again, complete with images, discussion, films, and everything else. You can look back and experience spine-tingling moments, as I have.

‘So everyone should have fun on Sunday, because football is a terrible injury to have. After everyone has had a good time on Sunday, we’ll get back to work on Monday to prepare for next season.

Pompey have been basking in the aftermath of a record-breaking season, winning League One against Barnsley and then lifting the trophy against Wigan last week.

Mousinho explained that the magnitude of his triumph is still seeping in, but there have been some memorable events along the way.

He went on to say that things are continually popping up, and both gamers and staff notice them. Things appear on a daily basis.

‘There’s someone’s perspective on how things are happening, and you get to relive the moment again. There’s Conor’s goal and the final whistle; all of these are fantastic memories

‘Everything appeared to happen at the perfect time. Jon (Harley) told me to go to the directors’ box and take a look (after Barnsley). It was a stunning vista.

‘It was an evening game, and you had all of the colours and how the game played out. It would have been extremely impossible to script anything better.

‘Even that night, when I returned to my residence in Southsea at 2.30am, I could still hear it going off everywhere. That was a beautiful moment, and it was fantastic to have that opportunity.
