Jay Stansfield problem solved as Birmingham City make three changes for Wrexham

On Monday evening, a high-profile League One match will see Wrexham visit Birmingham City in what promises to be an exciting encounter.

Both Birmingham City and Wrexham, who are at the top of the table, will put their unbeaten records on the line at St Andrew’s. Wrexham recently surged to the top of the promotion race with a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town and also secured a win against Salford City in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday.

Birmingham City will have had almost two weeks without a fixture due to international call-ups, with players like Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfons Sampsted, Willum Willumsson, and Lyndon Dykes returning ahead of the match against Wrexham.

Blues manager Chris Davies faces several selection dilemmas, including where to position record signing Jay Stansfield. The previous attempt to play top scorer Alfie May alongside Stansfield against Walsall did not yield the desired results. Davies is considering whether to deploy Stansfield on the right wing when out of possession, allowing him to move centrally during attacking phases, which could complement May’s playstyle of dropping into space and linking up the play.

The right-back position will see Alfons Sampsted replace Ethan Laird, who is sidelined with an ankle injury. Christoph Klarer, Krystian Bielik, and Alex Cochrane’s positions are secure. Marc Leonard is expected to partner Paik Seung-ho, although Tomoki Iwata’s arrival adds competition. If Stansfield plays on the right wing, a player who can maintain width on the left will be necessary for balance. Emil Hansson, despite a slow start, remains a strong candidate for that role.

Overall, Birmingham City’s XI for the game against Wrexham will see three changes from their last win over Wigan Athletic. Laird and Luke Harris are injured, and Taylor Gardner-Hickman also drops out.
