John Mousinho: Why Sean Raggett should leave Portsmouth now.

The central defender made 239 appearances and scored 17 goals with the Blues.

Pompey’s new ‘direction’ meant it was time to say goodbye to Sean Raggett.

That is the verdict of John Mousinho, who also paid respect to the tough central defender who is leaving after five years at Fratton Park.

Raggett was out of contract this summer and was not offered new terms, bringing his Blues career to an end after 239 games and 17 goals.

For many, it’s a devastating departure, since the former Norwich man is unquestionably one of the most popular singers of recent years.

Pompey’s head coach has stated his reasoning for the choice.

Mousinho praised Sean’s outstanding service to the football club, which culminated in a title-winning season and a league winner’s medal.

‘The decision we make is based on whether we believe players deserve contracts first and foremost, and whether they will offer significant value to our Championship team second.

‘Sean absolutely deserves a new contract and I believe he would contribute value to the Championship, but there will most likely be stronger offers for him elsewhere, particularly longer-term offers.

‘It is also the direction the football club wishes to pursue. It’s never just about age, but when it comes to bringing in certain players, this is a good time for both parties to shake hands and go forward.

‘We had a fantastic talk with Sean on Monday; he’s obviously realistic about the club’s direction and had figured it out for himself because he’s a bright young man.

‘He has been out of the team at times this year, but has fought his way back and performed admirably.

‘When Tom McIntyre came in, Sean was obviously furious about being left out of the team, which is great; we had a mature discussion about it. Then 54 minutes later, he’s back in and has started almost every game since.

‘The past several weeks have been an appropriate homage to such a prominent player at the football club. He’s a very beloved figure here, and it’s wonderful to end on a positive note.’

Pompey, of course, have plenty of central defenders for their return to the Championship – when they’re fit.

Regan Poole, Conor Shaughnessy, Tom McIntyre, and Ryley Towler are all signed for the following season and beyond.

Mousinho confessed that factored influencing Raggett’s future.

He said, “The fact that we already have four contracted center-halves comes into it.” Going into next year, we believe all four can compete at that level.

‘At the time, we are not seeking for any more in that position; we are satisfied with the four we have in the building.

‘Although we will continue to study the market and see what happens, we are currently satisfied with the four.’
