Jordan James clarity and Chris Davies urgency as Birmingham City begin transfer window

Birmingham City have lots to do in the summer transfer window after relegation to League One for the first time in three decades

New Birmingham City manager Chris Davies

The transfer window opens on Friday, allowing Birmingham City to officially bring in new players for Chris Davies’ squad ahead of the upcoming League One season.

So far, Blues have not added any new players, primarily because they only hired a manager a week ago. However, the recruitment process is expected to accelerate now. Several players have been linked to the club, and there are uncertainties about some of the current squad members.

Regarding Jordan James, the situation is straightforward. The midfielder, who scored eight goals last season, drew interest in January, and Blues will find it hard to keep him with Atalanta showing renewed interest. At 19, James is unlikely to stay in League One after breaking into Wales’ starting lineup. While he might not be an Adam Wharton-level player, Blues should still secure a good transfer fee for him.

Ethan Laird, Paik Seung-ho, Koji Miyoshi, and Juninho Bacuna need to decide if they are willing to play in League One. Although some Blues players have the talent for the Championship, it would be encouraging to see them take responsibility for the relegation and commit to helping the team bounce back.

Krystian Bielik, who had a meeting with Davies on his first day, is also a key player. Retaining him would be a significant boost for next season.

The recruitment process is being managed by technical director Craig Gardner, academy technical director Mike Rigg, and new manager Davies. Their goal, as directed by chief executive Garry Cook, is to “build a Championship squad for League One.” This involves leveraging data more than ever to identify and sign players based on their performance metrics. Davies emphasized the importance of careful and clear recruitment to bring in the right characters both on and off the pitch.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers was the first player linked to Blues this summer. According to The Star, Blues are among several League One clubs interested in Byers, who is out of contract at Hillsborough.

BirminghamLive reports that Blues are also interested in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard. After an impressive season on loan at Northampton Town, Leonard, who is in the final year of his Brighton contract, might make a permanent move. Blues are seeking durable players, and Leonard, having started all 46 games for Northampton, fits the bill. A fee of £300,000 could secure his transfer, but Blues face competition from clubs including Sheffield United, Oxford United, and Wrexham.

Blues have also been linked to Burnley’s 24-year-old playmaker Scott Twine. However, he has multiple Championship options, including a potential return to Bristol City, where he was on loan last season.
