JUST IN: Gary Lineker’s reaction to Everton controversy v Ipswich as…

Gary Lineker and Shay Given expressed their agreement with the VAR decision after Ipswich Town’s penalty against Everton was overturned.

The Toffees claimed a 2-0 victory at Portman Road on Saturday, October 19, with goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane.

The match could have taken a different turn when referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty for a potential foul by Dwight McNeil on Jack Clarke. However, after a review, the penalty was rescinded, a decision Lineker discussed on *Match of the Day* that same evening, asking, “Penalty? What do you think?”

Given quickly responded, stating, “I think Michael Oliver made the right decision.”

Lineker concurred with the former Newcastle goalkeeper, adding, “In the end.”

The performance from Everton was impressive, showcasing their experience as a Premier League team against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Their professional display highlighted the contrast between a newly promoted team and seasoned competitors in the league.

While it could be argued that the home team had more opportunities and perhaps the better chances, it was Ndiaye and Keane’s excellent finishing that made the difference.

When the score was 1-1, Clarke went down, initially appearing to warrant a penalty, but upon closer inspection, it seemed that McNeil merely held his ground.

Dwight McNeil

Everton forward Dwight McNeil faced a situation reminiscent of a challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Newcastle that was not penalized, a decision that frustrated the Goodison fans. However, this time, they fully supported the referee’s call.
On another occasion, that decision could have gone against Sean Dyche’s team, potentially impacting their performance. Nevertheless, their professionalism stood out, allowing them to secure a valuable three points.
