Alfons Sampsted impressed in Birmingham City’s 2-1 victory over Stevenage in League One on Tuesday evening
The Icelandic international made his first league start for the Blues during their 2-1 win over Stevenage on Tuesday night.
Speaking to BirminghamLive afterward, a delighted Sampsted confirmed he will join the club permanently once his loan ends.
“Yes. I don’t know if I can say anything, but yes,” Sampsted responded when asked about the permanent move.
Blues manager Chris Davies praised Sampsted’s impressive performance, which earned him the Man of the Match title after being brought into the starting lineup.
The 26-year-old played a crucial role in the win, winning the penalty that Kieran Dowell converted to open the scoring and constantly troubling Stevenage’s defense down the right wing.
Reflecting on the match, Sampsted said: “First and foremost it was a great performance from the team, and I managed to make an impact with the penalty I earned and the energy I brought in.
“I’ve mostly played as a right full-back who loves to push high, and this system really suits that style. The manager gives me the freedom to drift inside at times, which works well for me. Watching from the sidelines for so long and finally being able to contribute on the pitch was a great feeling.”
Despite not playing regularly, Sampsted has been praised for his positive attitude. With Ethan Laird and Taylor Gardner-Hickman out due to injuries, Sampsted now has a chance to secure the right-back position.
He added: “You control what you can control. I’ve dealt with injuries and been out of the squad, so it’s been an uphill battle. But that hasn’t stopped me from putting in all the physical and tactical work with the team.”
