Our future' - Sheffield Wednesday boss offers insight on identifying Owls' next generation

Since joining the club, Röhl has closely observed many young players at Hillsborough, providing numerous academy talents the chance to train with the first team over the past 11 months. Apart from Bailey Cadamarteri, who significantly contributed to Wednesday’s Championship survival last season, three players have particularly stood out.

Pierce Charles, Sean Fusire, and Gabriel Otegbayo have been integrated into the senior setup for an extended period, all participating in the club’s preseason tour in Austria and Germany. Röhl views these three as key to the club’s future.

What does he look for in these young talents during their initial assessments? He explained, “It’s about how quickly they think.” He noted, “When I first saw Sean in a small rondo, I was impressed by his quick thinking and his ability to find solutions before receiving the ball. He can accelerate the game and shows great bravery with the ball, which is fantastic to witness.”

Regarding Gabriel, Röhl was impressed by his leadership qualities in defense, noting, “He speaks up and tries to guide his teammates. His bravery is commendable, and it’s crucial to give them opportunities in training to evaluate their long-term potential. Some may need more time to develop.”

These three players have consistently performed at a high level, contributing to their growth. Röhl highlighted the benefits of Pierce playing in cup matches and national team games for his development. He believes they represent the club’s future.

The next steps for this trio are yet to be determined, but they will be keen to learn their upcoming opponent in the Carabao Cup draw later today, with Röhl likely to give them playing time in the fourth-round match following their contributions to the victory over Blackpool.
